A few weeks ago, one of our staffers received a plea from a friend on Facebook – the Child Guidance Clinic in Meriden had more families in need this season than they could provide for and Clinic staffers were reaching out to their networks to see if anyone could help by hosting toy drives. After some quick checking around the office, we offered to adopt one of their families in need.
This family is getting a new start just in time for the New Year, but they had very little to start over with. Their requests were modest, warm coats and new shoes topped the list and some books and board games for their children. They were open to receiving gently used items and so some of our staffers used this as an opportunity to teach their own children – children who themselves are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa – a secret that adults know, that there is great beauty in playing Santa and giving without expecting anything in return as they went through their own toys and picked out some they thought another family could enjoy.
This season is a time for blessings and joy and this act won’t just bring blessings and joy to the recipients — it brought blessings and joy to all of us in the office. It was, for us, a reminder of what the season is about and of all the new beginnings coming for families in 2014.
